BIO 123 Cellular Basis of Life

A foundational course in biology that serves as part of the introduction to the major. This introduction includes exploration of the following concepts: general chemical principles, cell structure and function, metabolism, energy pathways, cell division, and classical and molecular genetics. Class activities will focus on gaining learning skills necessary to succeed in college in general and the Biological Sciences major in particular. Laboratory exercises will include hands-on exercises, modeling of biological systems, and student-designed investigations that culminate in formal lab reports. Three class periods and one three-hour laboratory each week. (Three hours and twenty minutes of lecture and three hours of laboratory per week.) NOTE: This first-year course is the prerequisite to the majority of upper-level courses in Biological Sciences.
