HIS 103 Survey of African His (AFR)
Prerequisite: GSTR 110 (or waiver)
This survey course introduces students to the history of Africa from antiquity to the early 21st century. It offers a general overview of the major civilizations and continent-wide highlights from the pre-historic, ancient, and medieval periods. These highlights include ancient Kemet (Egypt) and its place in African and western histories. Students are also introduced to the kingdoms of ancient Aksum and Kush, as well as the famed medieval-era civilizations of the western Sudan: Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. Other topics include the profound cultural influence of Africa’s Moorish Empire, and the catastrophic impact of the "Asiento" (European controlled enslavement trade) and western Colonialism.
