Degree Requirements
A major in History is achieved by completion of the following requirements, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Core Course

Required Distribution Courses
Seven HIS course credits selected by the student, in consultation with their Academic Advisor, meeting the following distributive requirements.
Level Distribution Requirements
Minimum of four (4) course credits at the 200 level or above, two of which must be at the 300 or above (Excluding HIS 200 and HIS 406).
Field Distribution Requirements
Minimum of two (2) course credits in United States History, with at least one (1) of those course credits in African American History
Minimum of three (3) regional course credits, at least two (2) of which must be from different regions:
Asia, Africa, Europe, The Middle East, and The Americas (non-U.S.)
Minimum of one (1) course credit in Global & Transnational History
Minimum of two (2) course credits in pre-1700 History
A single course may meet multiple distribution requirements. For example, HIS 243: The Silk Road could serve as a 200-level class and meet the Global/Transnational and pre-1700 requirements. However, students must reach a total of seven (7) HIS distribution course credits to complete the major.

Required Collateral Courses
A foreign language through the third (103) level.
A student who has advanced language skills in a language other than English will be able to waive this requirement subject to a review by History Department. Such students should contact the Chairperson of the History Department to request this waiver. Students who are granted this waiver are still required to meet the General Education curriculum’s International Richness and Beyond the Borders Value with two different courses.
