HIS 136 Latin American History
From Tierra del Fuego to the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, the region we know today as Latin America is bound together by a shared past of imperial rule and revolution. This course explores Latin American history from the early modern rise of Indigenous empires to the present-day rise of populist regimes on both the Left and Right. This course introduces students to the major figures, themes, and events in colonial Latin American history, as well as the fundamental skills of historical analysis. Students will engage critically with primary and secondary sources, identifying and developing their own historical arguments as they discover the cultures, languages, and landscapes of this diverse and dynamic region.
